Roofs have different shapes and sizes. Some roofs are flat,
some are slopped but all roofs have one thing in common e.g., Roof Leaks. Most
people don’t realize or give importance to roofs until a roof leak has
happened. This is the time when they call a roofer and ask for its professional
help. People become frustrated when the roofer informed them that they need
roof replacement. Some roofers charge on hourly basis while some will charge a
single time handsome amount for the whole roof replacement project. However,
before the start of every roofing job there are a few basic rules for safe roof
work which every homeowner should be familiar with.
Things you need to know
first
1.
With any roof repairing or
replacement project there will be noise and debris. So, be ready for this and
keep your children away from roofing site.
2.
Inform your roofer what is
beneath the roof especially if, you have delicate flower beds or shrubbery that
needs special protection.
3.
Roofing is a noisy job as
it entails hammering and power equipment.
4.
Any items hanging on the
walls should be safely removed, also bring in flower pots or other yard objects
close to the perimeter of the roof.
5. If, your roof is made up of wood shingles then the wood
particles will fall into your attic so be aware of that and cover up your items
in the attic with some protective cloth.
The Roofing process for
shingles.
A moderately size roofing job
takes three to five days.
1.
Remove all the existing
shingles and put them in a roll-off.
2.
If, the roof is in good
condition do minor repairs otherwise replace the torn off wood with boards of
ply-wood.
3.
Install the “ice dam,”
which is an ice and water barrier made of plastic to prevent backed up ice in
the gutters from working itself under the shingles.
4.
Put down asphalt paper.
5.
Apply the shingles –
starting with the edges and working upwards.
6.
Apply flashing around all
areas where leaks might come into the house like against the chimney, around
the stack vents, etc.
7.
Install the ridge vent.
Many roofing jobs result in lower than expected life spans.
This is because of improper material selection, wrong roofing decision and lack
of understanding the climate conditions which will surely affect the roof, the
most.
